Silica combined with boron trioxide forms the basis of high borosilicate glass and gives it a remarkably low thermal expansion coefficient. Ordinary glass cracks under thermal shock, whereas borosilicate 3.3 maintains its strength and transparency through repeated heating and cooling cycles.
